Photos work like any other image

A photo of a document is handled the same way as a scan: the handwriting-detection model finds handwritten marks, and those regions are reconstructed from the surrounding background. Phone photos are auto-rotated using the orientation data your camera already embeds in the file, so a photo taken sideways still comes out upright.

What we're honest about

Photos introduce two things a flatbed scan doesn't: perspective distortion (the page looks like a trapezoid instead of a rectangle) and uneven lighting. We don't yet run a deskew or perspective-correction step — building one that reliably improves photos without ever distorting or misaligning printed content is a real computer-vision problem on its own, and we'd rather ship an honest limitation than a corner-detection heuristic that occasionally warps your document. For now, a photo taken reasonably flat and straight-on, in decent light, will get the most reliable results.

Tips for a cleaner result

  • Lay the page flat and shoot from directly above it, not at an angle
  • Avoid heavy shadows falling across the page
  • Make sure the whole page is in frame and in focus

Questions about this

Does it matter what phone or camera I used?

No. Any JPG, PNG, WEBP, or TIFF photo works. The photo's embedded orientation data is read automatically so it comes out right-side up regardless of how the phone stored it.

My photo is a bit tilted — is that a problem?

A slight tilt is generally fine. We're being upfront that heavy tilt or perspective distortion (photographing a page at a steep angle) is not corrected automatically today — the photo is processed as-is. For best results, photograph the page as flat and straight-on as you reasonably can.

What about shadows or uneven lighting?

The detection model looks at local contrast between ink and the surrounding background within each region it flags, which tolerates moderate shadows and uneven lighting reasonably well — but a very dark or low-contrast photo will be harder to process accurately than a well-lit one.
